With billions of websites competing in the same market, you cannot expect to get a return from a website that has not been designed correctly. The steps to start your site

Things you will need to create your own site.

1. A home for your site. This is called your website hosting company. I wont go into too much detail here, but there are thousands of hosting companies out there. One suggestion I can make is don't be fooled or too concerned by all the specs and tech out there, you need to find the hosting you can afford that offers the most "storage" with the most "bandwidth". These are the most important things. Today all the other options you will see are offered by 99% of hosting companies anyway.
2. Choose a domain name. This is the www.address of your site. You must check that your domain name is not already taken. You can do this by using a "Whois" web site.
3. This is the "FUN" part. Building your website. If you have never designed or built a web site before, you can get hold of a CMS (Content Management System). This will usually give you options for a template, then allow you to load content your self. Another option is web site design software. Good ones are Dreamweaver and NVU(free). Another option is to read a few html tutorials on-line and learn how to create your website from scratch with a good text editor.
4. Once your site is created and you are happy with it, post it live to the server at your hosting company.
5. Now the work starts. You need to get your site known. Do a little research into Google Web master tools and other SEO  (Search Engine Optimization) tips. Keep your site fresh with new content.
6. Keep up the hardwork. Like I said getting your site known takes work, but it will be worth it.
